* Derived for comparison at a 5% residual value: SLM = 95% ÷ life; WDV = 1 − 0.05^(1 ÷ life). Schedule II prescribes useful lives, not rates. NESD = no extra-shift depreciation.

Assumptions used

  • Rates as at: reference data version 2026.09.1. Source: Companies Act, 2013 - Schedule II (see section 123), Part C, as amended by MCA notification G.S.R. 627(E) dated 29-08-2014 and later amendments.
  • Rows marked “Under review” are being checked against the Gazette text; treat them with care.
  • SLM and WDV rates are derived for comparison only, at a 5% residual value. Schedule II prescribes useful lives; a different residual value gives a different rate.
  • Lives assume single-shift working. Intangible assets are amortised under AS 26 / Ind AS 38, not under Part C, and are not listed.

Frequently asked questions

What useful life does Schedule II give for computers and laptops?

Part C gives 3 years for end-user devices such as desktops and laptops, and 6 years for servers and networks.

What is the useful life of general plant and machinery?

General plant and machinery that is not a continuous process plant and is not covered by an industry-specific entry has a useful life of 15 years. Continuous process plant with no special entry has 25 years.

What does NESD mean?

No Extra Shift Depreciation. For rows marked NESD, the 50% (double shift) or 100% (triple shift) increase in depreciation does not apply.

Can a company use a different useful life?

Yes, with justification. Part A says the useful life shall not ordinarily differ from Part C; a company that uses a different life or a residual value above 5% must disclose the justification (usually technical advice) in its financial statements.

Why are rates shown if Schedule II only gives lives?

Many registers and audit files still quote a rate. The table shows the SLM rate (95% ÷ life) and the WDV rate (1 − 0.05^(1 ÷ life)) at a 5% residual so you can compare; the Schedule II calculator works them out for your own residual value.
